What is the difference between vray and mental ray
As if nvidia didn't get enough exposure from my post, I'll end this part with- Max prefers nvidia cards in all price segments so you're always better suited to choose an nvidia card over AMD, even if you don't plan to use either iray or Vray RT. To student asking about dell or hp- get neither. They are Apples of the PC world.
Get a dedicated desktop and ask on a tech forum to help you select the parts that fit in your budget. Try a site like tomshardware. You'll find many helpful and knowledgeable persons to help you. Ask local hardware service to assemble your parts into a computer. You'll get maximum warranty, local, friendly hardware service if anything should go awry and best of all- you get best performance for your money. All this unless you need a laptop. They suck, are overpriced- but are mobile and no desktop can give you that.
If you can, always get a desktop. You want to get the best gaming system you can afford. If you can play all the latest games at max settings, you can play in Max quite comfortably. Because of this, you'll find help easily. Avoid getting a "proffesional" graphic card. Autodesk only certifies pro GPUs since there is one pro card per gaming ones- it's a lot less work for them. This is well known "public secret". Sure, you want to balance them equaly in price range , but untill you get comfortable with CPU renderes I suggest you stay away from the GPU ones becase they all lack the universality of CPU kind.
Lastly, you want an intel CPU since not everything in Max is rendering. In fact most applications, Max included, use only 1 CPU core most of the time- so you want the best single threaded performance as well as multicore one.
With that factored in, intel is the only game in town. If you want to learn Vray I would suggest Grant Warwicks online tutorials. The first lesson is available for free here I was hoping not to get drawn into what-is-better-debate, but after watching this video posted by a. A very simple scene takes 43s to render after being tweaked to render almost twice as fast, compared to the default Vray render of 1m 30sec.
This is a fairly impressive improvement over the default rendering time, shown by what I can only presume is a Vray expert. The problem here is that this particular scene should take no more than a couple of seconds to render even on the slowest 12 threaded system.
So I switched to MR 3. This thread has been automatically closed as it remained inactive for 12 months. If you wish to continue the discussion, please create a new thread in the appropriate forum. Difference between mental ray and vray. What is the difference between mental ray and vray? Why do we use mental ray? Can you give me a tutorial of mental ray where light does not coming from window. It will be night and light comes from Interior bulbs.
Brian-Bradley UTC 4. Hi All, Definately agree with the first statement, not too sure with the second though. Posted August 29, Justin Hunt Posted August 29, A little about the renderings on this thread: MR image: GI and FG were precalculated, so render above is reading them from file. Nic H Posted August 29, Hi the answer of your question is in your images.
Hi Ramy, we had do many test vray vs mr, and we think vray is not faster, or mental is better. Posted September 2, Hello Ramy, I have to go with Thorsten here, there's something very fishy with that MR scene, the amount of noise you are getting is not normal at all, I too suspect the lights plus their sampling, I also see some overexposed areas plus problems with the overall ligthing of the scene which could use more work if you don't mind me say, and not enough bounces in some places such as the upper wall section of the green lights, it'll be interesting if you figure out the issue and let us know about it.
Posted September 2, edited. Ramy, I would love to render your scene. Edited September 6, by issacdhan. Posted September 3, edited. Edited September 3, by ramy. Edited September 3, by thorsten hartmann. Posted September 5, Posted October 4, All, I finished the animation to this project and kept it in vray. Justin Hunt Posted October 4, Came out nicely well done. Hi Ramy, can you post it on a other place, for example vimeo. Posted October 5, Nice stuff Ramy.. Thorsten, just updated it to vimeo.

Vray is sold separately which is adds up the cost but mental ray is built into Autodesk3D Studio Max and Autodesk Maya. Both are the render engines but Vray provides the much realistic output than Mental ray.
